New process for controlling or combatting injurious mites or insects comprises contacting them with a substd. thiophene of formula (I). In (I) A is phenyl, naphthyl, or phenyl substd. by F, Cl, Br, NO2, 1-5C alkyl, 5-6C cycloalkyl, phenyl, 1-3C alkylthio, 1-3C alkoxy, 1-2C alkylenendioxy and/or halomethyl (halomethyl carrying 1-3 halogen atoms from F, Cl and Br); Y is as A and can also be H, F, Cl, Br, phenylthio, phenylsuphono, or phenylthio substd. by F, Cl, Br, NO2, 1-5C alkyl, 5-6C alkyl, 5-6C cycloalkyl, 1-3C alkoxy and/or halomethyl; Z is H, phenyl or phenyl substd. by F, Cl, Br, NO2, 1-5C alkyl, 1-3C alkoxy and/or halomethyl. (I) are useful for controlling injurious arthropods, esp. mites and insects, and may be used in plant protection, opt. in conjunction with other active ingredients such as insecticides, acaricides, fungicides or bactericides. When cotton plants infested with adults of Tetranychusurticae were sprayed with a 1000 ppm dispersion of 2-(p-methylthiophenyl) thiophene, 100% kill was obtd. within 6 days; 2-(o-diphenylyl) thiophene gave 75% kill in the same test.
