A programmed calculator is used in conjunction with a clock generator to produce a reference for a physical or chemical parameter as a function of time. Equations higher than first degree are generated by increasing the number of segments. A memory (2) is programmed from a data loading assembly (1) to receive required amplitude and time data for a number of time segments. Time base unit (3) produces pulses from the mains supply to drive a clock generator (4) when a comparator (5) determine that the clock time is equal to the programmed time. A digital calculator (6) receives the time and amplitude data to calculate required reference signal which is read on a display (7).
