Compsn. consists of a mixed oxide of manganese and =1 other metal. claimed compsns. are (1) CuxMn3-xO4 (where x is 1-1.8 (1-1.5) and pref. has one of the specific values, 1, 1.1, 1.2 and 1.4); (2) Ni-zCuzMn2O4 (where O = z 1 (z = 0-0.7) and pref. z has the specific values 0.25, 0.5 and 0.6); (3) Ag Mn2O4. The compsn. pref. also contain 12-16(14) wt.% graphite. Used in electrocatalysis, electrolysis, electrosynthesis and in prim. sec. and fuel cell batteries. It is specifically, for reduction of O2 in fuel cells where the cathode has the claimed compsn. The compsns. can be used equally in neutral, alkaline and slightly acid media. They give rise to current densities at least equal to those obtd. using Pt and Ag, and they are much cheaper.
