A yarn winding or un-winding device includes a basically vertical spindle onto of from which yarn is wound such that a balloon of yarn is formed around the spindle. The extend of the balloon is limited by a balloon suppression guide which surrounds the spindle and which is formed by a circular array of parallel bars which are parallel with the spindle axis and which form a cylindrical surface around the spindle. The device is partic. used for winding synthetic yarns (e.g. polypropylene). Winding can be effected at high speeds and yarn breakages are reduced.
