An inking mechanism esp. for an offset printing machine has the ink film thickness controlled in such a way that the speed of ink feed is related to the topographical surface properties of the ink. The regulating unit has a sensor (36) positioned near to one ink transfer roller (30) to monitor the ink surface properties. The sensor has a signal generator whose signals are related to the beam reflection properties of the printing ink on the circumferential surface of the roller. The amount of radiation reflected along a predetermined path is determined and provides a measure of the film thickness at the gap.
