At least one chemical species is detected in a sample of liq. fed into a reactor contg. a gas mixt. and a reagent, pref. a strong acid contg. Hg(SCN)2 and Fe(ClO4)3. The sample modifies the gas mixt. which is fed into a detector measuring the species or cpd.(s) in the sample. The sample is pref. a body fluid, esp. blood, blood serum, or blood plasma, in which CO2 is determined; and the detector pref. measures the thermal conductivity (TC) of the modified gas mixt. A liq., esp. the reagent, is pref. used to push the modified gas mixt. out of the reactor into the detector, esp. using a vol. of liq. smaller than the reactor vol. and a tube connecting the reactor to the detector. Accurate determn. of CO2 and Cl is achieved using only a small sample.
