Automatic weighing stations at entrance and exit from supermarkets are used to reduce the possibility of pilfering. The entrance to the goods area of a supermarket is via an entrance gate (1) with a weighing machine (3) platform. The gate only opens after the weight of the individual has been recorded. Exit from the goods region is via a double gate (7) enclosure with a separate weighing machine (6) and platform. A cash register with associated computer, compares entrance and exit weights. If a substantial difference exists an alarm is triggered and the gates remain closed.
