Thermally compensated grinding spindle mounting - has bearing housing mounted on membrane providing large radial stiffness but permitting axial thermal movement

The grinding spindle head consists of a fixed and a rotating part. The rotating part is mounted with two sets of ball bearings in the fixed part. The bearing sets consist of two angular contact bearings mounted back to back to minimise axial play. Thermal expansion of the parts can be taken up in the axial direction. For this purpose an elastic membrane is used to fixed one of the bearing housing to the fixed part of the grinding spindle head. The membranes have large radial stiffness so that radial loads on the bearings set can be taken up.
