Brominated tri:aryl phosphate prepn. - by reacting tri:aryl phosphate(s) with bromo chloride, esp. for flame retardants

Opt. alkyl substd. brominated triarylphosphates of formula (I) are prepd. by emulsifying corresponding triarylphosphates in water and then reacting them with an equimolar mixt. of Br2 and Cl2, esp. BrCl at -10 to +80 degrees C (where X, Y, and Z are mono- or polynuclear opt. is not 6C alkyl substd. is not 18C aromatic gps.; and a, b and c are 0-3; and a+b+c = 0.5-6). (I) are flame retardants for resins and fibres and have high thermal stability cf. bromoalkylphosphates. The reaction is carried out at lower temps. without any chlorine substitution taking place and without the use of catalysts.
