New aryloxyethyl phosphates flame retardants for polymer fibres - prepd. by reacting phenolate with tris haloethyl phosphates

New 2-aryloxyethyl phosphates have formula (where x is 1 or 3; R is aryl; and Hal is Cl or Br). Prepn. is by reacting the phenolate corresp. to R with tris-(2-haloethyl) phosphate at 5-150 pref. 70-80 degrees C in a strongly polar solvent selected from DMSO, DMF, dimethylacetamide and N-methyl pyrrolidone, the mole ratio of phosphate to phenolate being either 1:1 or 1:3. Claimed use is as flame retardants for polymers esp. PAN-based fibres. Yields are high and by-products low for both mono and tris reactions.
