Cylindrical articles having an end portion of uncreased diameter but such that the plastic torque of the bending resistance of the end portion exceeds that of the central portion by is not 10% are straightened on a skewed-roll machine. The machine includes a support roll having a biconcave profile in which the end regions are hyperboloidal to engage the central portion of the workpiece, while the central region of the roll is hyperboloidal and of greater curvature to engage the thicker end portion. There is also a pressure roll having hyperboloidally concave end portions to engage the central portion of the workpiece, and a convex central region of such configuration that it produces on the workpiece a bending torque less than the maximum permissable for straightening the central portion but not less than the minimum needed to straighten the end portion. The apparatus provided for straightening of the thinner central portion and thicker end portion in a single pass.
