The compound cellular building block or brick permits the construction of a cavity wall with one block module of a width equal to that of the finished wall thickness. Sections (1,2) of the partitions are joined by intermittent bridges (4), which can be removed as the construction of the wall progresses, a non-bridged cavity (3). The external section (1) of the block comprises the load-bearing leaf, and the cavity (3) may be filled with insulating material. When both sound and thermal insulation is required the block may have a central load bearing section with a cavity (3) on each side between inner and outer subsidiary leaves. Both cavities have intermittent bridges which are again removed. The outer cavity may be filled with sound insulating material and the inner with thermally insulating material.
