N-hydroxyalkyltrimellitic acid imides are made by reacting trimellitic acid anhydride (I) with a monoalkanolamine (II) in an aq. medium contg. =1 solvent (e.g. water) comprising (A) a cpd. which is liq. at room temp. (25 degrees C) and which contains =1 X-O-X gp. where X=H or C, with the exception of monohydric alcohols boiling at is not 80 degrees C and ethers boiling at is not 60 degrees C; or (B) solvents (e.g. THF) which mix easily with water at room temp. (25 degrees C), using is not 0.0251 solvent(s) per mol (I). Process gives N-hydoxyalkyltrimellitic acid imides of good purity and colour, useful in the prodn. of polyalkylenetrimellitimides with high thermal stability, useful in the prodn. of films, sheets, fibres, fabrics, mouldings, adhesives and coatings with high mechanical strength and modulus of elasticity.
