The container ship for fruit has special air ducts coupled to the containers to draw out the air and also any carbon dioxide from the fruit. The containers are fitted with large venting ports and small entry ports, which are blocked off so that the pumping action ensures that the corners are vented of carbon dioxide. No special walls and bulkheads are required inside the containers. The carbon dioxide is efficiently removed by a low pressure system. The containers can be used for conventional cargo on the return journey.
