Fibre tow severing device has a protective housing disposed laterally of a can and below feed rollers, the housing being provided with a recess on the side facing the can. Recess has a horizontal slot through which projects a needle comb to engage with its needles the moving fibre tow to break the tow when the can is full and is displaced relative to the feed rollers at a speed which is greater than that of the tow speed imparted by the rollers. Used for discharging stretched fibre tows into cans. Tow is severed by rupturing rather thay by clean cutting and the progressively thinner "tail" of the fibres permits of tying of the tow end to the start of a fresh tow.
