Press tools for embossing and gelling resin coated sheet - to minimise pattern costs and obtain permanent impressions

Textured surface coatings are obtd. by coating a supporting sheet with a layer of unfused resin and then pressing the coated sheet in a mould using high frequency (HF) heating to fuse and gell the coating while the mould tool imprints an embossed pattern. The coating is chilled before release from the mould. Used to apply (0.076-0.24 mm) coatings to fabric or sheet substrates typically 0.5-1.0mm thick to produce simulated hide upholstery covers etc. For products involving frequent pattern changes, flat sheet embossing plates for use as mould liners are more readily and cheaply made than conventional cylindrical embossing rolls. The pressure may be maintained long enough to overcome the elastic recovery of coating materials of relatively high mol.wt. and corresponding long time constants for obtaining permanent deformation.
