1492358 Eye instruments H L MICHAEL 15 April 1976 [18 April 1975 10 Feb 1976] 15465/76 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions G2 and H4] Apparatus for measuring movements of a person's eyes comprises an electro-optical set 19, 20 for one or each eye, the or each set having emitters of non-modulated invisible infra-red light, detectors for receiving light which is emitted from respective emitters and then reflected by an eye, an infra-red filter in the light path to each detector for transmitting only infra-red light, and a source of visible light which can be independently interrupted, the emitters, detectors and light source being fixed relative to each other such that, upon directing a beam of visible light from said source onto a predetermined part of the eye, the emitter's are suitably aligned with required parts of the eye, the apparatus further comprising an electronic circuit which supplies continuous current to the emitters and which converts the power of reflected light received by the detectors into a continuous voltage or output signal for feeding to processing, reading and/or recording apparatus. The elements of each set 19, 20 are housed in a box 24 having a line of apertures 33-37 behind which are positioned the visible light source, flanked by two emitters which are flanked in turn by two detectors. The light source may be obturated by a pivoted plate 38. Each box 24 is pivotally mounted on a carriage 27 which is slidably mounted on a rail 18. As shown the rail 18 is attached to a helmet 11 so that the sets 19, 20 may be adjustably positioned in front of the person's face. In a modification (Fig. 11, not shown) a further line of emitters and detectors is positioned at right angles to the first line in each set 19, 20, the visible source lying on both lines. The sets 19, 20 may alternatively be mounted on an adjustable head clamp (Figs. 12-18, not shown), which comprises an inverted U-shaped bar, the free ends of which serve for adjustable attachment to a table or other support and to which are attached forehead and chin supports and an adjustable mount for the sets 19, 20.
