1499335 Leather dressing compositions CIBA-GEIGY AG 10 Dec 1974 [12 Dec 1973 (2)] 53403/74 Heading A5E [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] Leather is dressed and rendered resistant to microbial attack by treatment with an aqueous or organic preparation comprising: (I) a reaction product of (a) a di- or polyepoxide, (b) a C 12-24 primary fatty amine, (c) a dicarboxylic acid HOOC(CH 2 ) y-1 COOH (y=1-13) and optionally (d) an anhydride of an at least C 8 aromatic dicarboxylic acid, an at least C 2 aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or of an at least C 4 aliphatic dicarboxylic acid, (e) a C 2-21 aliphatic diol and/or (f) a difunctional compound differing from (a), (c), (d) and (e); and (II) an aminoplast precondensate which contains an alkyl ether group. II may be present either in admixture with I, or as an additional reactant in the formation of I or both. (a) may be a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A having an epoxide content of at least 5 epoxide group equivalents per kg. An example of (b) is stearylamine. (c) may be adipic acid, malonic acid or succinic acid. (d) may be phthalic anhydride. An example of (e) is neopentyl glycol; (f) may be epichlorohydrin. (II) may be the n-butyl ether of hexamethylolmelamine. The composition may contain 50-80% by wt. of II based on the weight of I and II. The composition may be applied in the form of an aqueous solution or emulsion. Treatment may take place at 100-160‹C. Examples relate to the treatment of polyamide needle felt carpet. In examples the resistance of the leather to attack by bacteria, e.g. Staphylococous aureus, Eschorichia coli and Proteus vulgaris and fungi, e.g. Trichophyton Mentagrophtyes, is tested.
