1503859 Cutting inserts for cutting tools KENNAMETAL Inc 11 June 1976 [13 June 1975] 24186/76 Headings B3B and B3K A cutting insert for a cutting tool such as a milling or boring tool comprises a polygonal body with top and bottom faces 30 connected by a peripheral wall 32 rounded at its corners 34 and which meets the respective faces to form edges 38 at least one recess is formed in one of the faces and extends from a point 52 near a respective corner 34 and along a respective edge 38 of the insert, the recess progressively widening in a direction away from the corner 34. The recess has a first bottom surface portion 42 inclined downwardly from the respective edge 38 and a second bottom surface portion 41 which extends upwardly from the lower edge of the first surface portion to said surface 30, the bottom surface portions being orientated in twisted planes each surface portion making an ever increasing included angle with the plane of the respective surface 30 in a direction away from the respective corner, the recess also being provided with an end wall portion 36 at the end of the recess remote from the respective corner and extending from adjacent ends upwardly to the surface 30. The insert described may be used in milling and boring tools and secured therein by way of a wedge which clamps the insert in the slot of the holder. A plurality of similar recesses may be provided in both faces 30 of the insert.
