1513158 Anti-ulcer medicaments from Senecio species LABORATOIRE ROGER BELLON 1 Dec 1975 [29 Nov 1974] 51879/74 Heading A5B [Also in Division C2] Plant extracts having activity against gastric ulcers are produced by subjecting plant material from the species Senecio ambavilla pers., Senecio jacobea and Senecio vulgaris to aqueous extraction, removing solid material from the extract and then drying the extract. The aqueous extract may be subjected to adsorption on non-polar ion exchange resin, the active fraction then being eluted with aqueous C 1-6 alkanol, dried, redissolved in water, purified on a polyamide resin column and the effluent collected and dried, the dry residue then being extracted with C 1-6 alkanol, ketone or ester, adsorbed on silica, eluted with ethyl acetate/methanol and the eluate dried to give a purified active product comprising a mixture of esters of glucose with 1-hydroxy-4- oxo-2, 5-cyclohexadienyl acetic acid, the esters having the general formula: wherein X 1 , X 2 , X 3 and X 4 each represent an esterifying group of formula: or an OH group, with the proviso that at least one of the said esterifying groups is present.
