1527182 Cutting teeth CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 4 March 1977 [2 July 1976] 09197/77 Heading B8H A ground engaging work element 10 comprises an upper 11 and lower (12) surface, Fig. 2, (not shown), and forward 15 and rearward 18 end portions between which is a middle portion 17, the surfaces 11 (12) converging from the rearward end portion 18 towards the forward end portion 15 at which there is a cutting edge 16, the middle portion 17 having a slot 19 of generally U-shape extending therethrough, the ends of the slot 19 being such a distance B from the edge 16. In use, after the forward end portion 15 has been worn away by a preselected amount, a portion P of the element 10 which lies between the legs 21, 22 of the slot 19 breaks away along a line extending through the ends of the slot 19. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown) the middle portion (17) is provided with two distinct converging slots (19, 20), portions (P, PSP1/SP) of the element which lie outside the two slots breaking away after the forward end portion has worn by a preselected amount.
