The gas generating device comprises a casing 33 and a cover plate 31 in screwed engagement therewith, the two parts being additionally secured together by a stud 37 engaging a nut member 39. A gas generating material 71 is disposed within the casing and a filter assembly 51 is located above the material 71 within the cover plate 31 so that combustion gases generated by burning of the material pass through the filter before discharge through orifices 45. A deformable member 42 is disposed adjacent the outlets from the orifices. The combustible material may be sodium azide NaN 3 . The filter comprises a plurality of porous layers of fibrous material, the layer nearest the orifices comprising fibres having diameters less than 20 microns, the fibres of each layer having diameters about one to four times the diameter of the fibres in the next adjacent downstream layer. Steel wool and fibreglass in various combinations form the layers, together with supporting screens, and all these are forced into the casing by a ram driving manufacture.
