PURPOSE:To provide a highly selective adsorbent useful for desalting of sea water, separation of organometal through cross-linking of polyethylene imine denaturalized by carboxymethyl in a water solution by epibromohydrin in the presence of a soluble salt. CONSTITUTION:Polyethylene imine with a molecular weight of more than 10,000, preferably about 70,000, is treated by monochloroacetic acid to carboxymethylize 10 to 70% of hydrogen directly bonded to N. The carboxymethyl denaturalized by polyethylene imine undergoes a cross-linking in a water solution with addition of epibromohydrin in the presence of a soluble salt (e.g. nickel chloride hexahydrate). Subsequently, adsorbed metal ion is eluted by mineral acid such as 2 to 4 N chloric acid to yield a highly selective adsorbent. The cross-linking reaction is performed at a normaltemperature to 50 deg.C and finalized by heating up to 95 to 110 deg.C.
