In the conversion of ammonium imidodisulphate and/or ammonium sulphamate into SO2 and NH3, opt. in the presence of ammonium dithionate, the ammonium salt(s) is/are brought into contact with a mixt. of molten ammonium bisulphate and ammonium sulphate, at 280-420 degrees C, in the presence of a S-contg. reducing agent and/or a catalyst contg. Mo, W, Cu, Fe, Co, Cr, Mn and/or Ni, to give a gaseous effluent contg. SO2 and NH3. The process is carried out at 0.5-10, pref. 1-5 atmos. pressure. The SO2 and NH3 can be recovered from the gaseous effluent for further use.
