The 5-substituted indolinones are prepared by reacting an indolin-2-one with RSP1/SPC 6 H 4 COCl; the 7- substituted indolinones are prepared by cyclizing a 2-acetamido-3-benzoylphenylacetic acid or an ethyl ester thereof. Therapeutic compositions which are preferably administered orally comprise compounds of the above formula, which prevent the inflammatory response to pleural irritation.
