The trench digging machine comprises a boom (6) carrying the digger chain (7) and a sliding box (10) trailing behind, with its lower end resting on the bottom of the trench just dug. The top of the boom is pivoted (8) to an intermediate bracket (5) which is, in turn, pivoted (20) to the vehicle. A vertical stay (9) is also pivoted at (8) and the box (10) is carried by the stay via parallelogram link bars (11, 12). The boom (6) is suspended from the lower bar (12) via an actuating cylinder or rod (13). The intermediate bracket may be raised or lowered about its pivot (20) by an actuator (14). The stay may be movable relative to the bracket about its pivot (8) by an actuator (15).
