The system sorts similar items into a number of different grades, having a conveyor (1) to which a number of holders are attached. The characteristics of the items are determined when the holders are in a particular position. The characteristics can be determined by electronic transducers, converting them into electrical signals, and an electronic programmable control system can be included, converting the signals into commands to mechanisms each releasing a holder (2). The latter is operated by an electromagnet (4).
