1416453 Making orthopaedic products LANDSTINGENS INKOPSCENTRAL 22 Nov 1972 [1 Dec 1971] 53972/72 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions B3 and B5] A moulding for use in making an orthopaedic product is made by (a) positioning a gas-tight, evacuatable mould having a wall which includes at least one flexible wall portion e.g. rubber in a desired position in relation to the contour of male and/or female master, (b) locating a porous compressible material e.g. foam rubber in predetermined positions inside the mould adjoining the flexible wall portion thereof, (c) pouring a granular material e.g. sand and/or cellular plastics pellets into the mould so that the flexible wall portion is deformed by the pressure of the material until it conforms to the contour of the master, (d) subjecting the space containing the granular material to a negative pressure so that the granular material forms a compacted moulding with a clearance of given size between the master and the mould, the clearance being greater at the predetermined positions than elsewhere and (e) maintaining the negative pressure in the mould while forming either a final or intermediate product in accordance with the shape of the flexible portion of the wall (for details of the method see Division B5). The orthopaedic product may be an above- or below-knee prosthesis, foot-beds and elevators for foot-wear, arch supports, arm abduction splints, fracture splints, inertia orthos for spastics, prone rests, corsets, foot sockets and shoe lasts.
