Vinyl polymer thermo-oxidative destruction inhibition - using poly arylene-alkylenes or their hydroperoxides, with low volatility

In the protection of vinyl polymers (I) against thermo-oxidative destruction by adding inhibitors (II), (II) are polyarylene-alkylenes of the formula: -(Ar1-(CH2)k)- m Ar2 - (CH2)k-Ar1 -n, or their hydroperodixdes (in which Ar1 and Ar2 are m+n = 2-30; k=1 or 2; if k=1, Ar, and Ar2 can also be X is H or 1-4C alkyl) and are used in an amt. of 0.01-10% w.r.t. (I). Used for the stabilisation of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polybutyl methacrylate, polystyrene, copolymers of methyl methacrylate and styrene, polyethylene and polyisobutylene. (II) have lower volatility and higher stability than the usual inhibitors and considerable chemical inertness, e.g. towards hydrolysis.
