Title acid is produced by dispersing methacrolein in an aqs. reaction mixt. and passing an O2-contg. gas through the mixt. in the presence of an Ag catalyst in which an alkaline earth hydroxide is added to the reaction mixt. in sufficient excess to form the metal salt, treating the reaction mixt. after oxidn. with sufficient CO2 to form a bicarbonate of the total alkaline earth metal and extracting the acid form the mixt. with an org. solvent contg. CO2.
