Aluminium-lead alloys prodn - by syphon impeller propelling solidifying droplets from fused bath

alloys contg 3-26 wt.% Pb for use as bearing matl are produced by heating the bath of alloying constituents to a temp above the miscibility gap. A rotating impeller is used to draw in the matl and project it in the shape of finely distributed droplets; these quickly solidify to granules and are collected. No protective gas atmosphere is required, the lead is embedded in the Al in fine (micron) distribution, price advantage of lead against tin is maintained; and no hydrogen embrittlement or gravity liquation are produced.
