Solasodine extraction from solanum tree fruit - using aq. alcohol and precipitating impurities by adjusting vol. of extract

Solasodine, a steroid precursor, is extracted and septd. by (a) extracting cut or fragmented, fresh or dried fruit of a plant of the gp Stellate Leptostemonium with a mixt. of H2O and CH3OH, C2H5OH, i-C3H7OH of their mixts; (b) removing most of the alcohol from the aq.-alcoholic extract by distillation; (c) adjusting the wt. of the resulting aq. extract to be not less than 20%; if the fruit was dried before extraction, or not less than 30%, if the fruit was fresh, of the wt. of the fruit in the fresh state; (d) separating ppted. impurities; (e) ppting crude heterosides without impurities, by making the aq. extract alkaline; (f) removing the ppted crude heterosides; (g) heating a mixt. of 16 pts. wt. crude heterosides, 55-72 pts. wt. i-C3H7OH, 4-8 pts HCl and H2O C to 100 pts wt) until hydrolysis of the heterosides is almost complete; (h) adding to the mixt. a conc. aq. alkali selected from NAOH, KOH, Na2CO3 and K2CO3 to give a pH between 9 and 10 (i) sepg. the solasodine which is ppted from the alkaline mixt. and (j) washing the solasodine with H2O. The fruit is pref. extracted when at the green-yellow stage of ripeness with aq i-C3H1OH.
