ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREThe quality and useful life of regenerative-cycletype incandescent lamps that employ iodine as the halogenare enhanced by dosing the lamps with a carefully controlledamount of SnI4 which decomposes when the lamp filament isenergized and provides from about 0.05 to 0.20 micromole ofvaporized elemental iodine per ml. of bulb volume within thelamp during operation. The resulting increase in the amountof iodine that is converted into atomic rather than molecularform within the energized lamp permits elongated iodine-cycle lamps having singly-coiled filaments to be operated inany position in contract to conventional iodine-cycle lampsof the same configuration and construction that exhibitearly blackening of the top portion of the envelope when thelamp is operated in a vertical position. The undesirablelight-absorption and color distortion effects characteristicof conventional iodine-dosed lamps are also reduced, thusincreasing the lamp efficiency.
