ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA multistep process is disclosed for the productionof a compound of the formula V:Vwherein R' and R" are alkyl of 1 to 3 carbon atoms, inclusiveor together is pyrrolidino, piperidino, 4-methylpiper-azino or morpholino; and wherein the rings A and B are unsub-stituted, or substituted by one or more substituents selectedfrom the group consisting of fluoro, chloro, bromo, nitro andtrifluoromethyl. Compounds of formula V are used for treatmentof anxieties and/or depressions in mammals and birds. Thisdivisional application is directed to the production of inter-mediate compounds of the formula II:wherein R1 is hydrogen or halogen. The process comprises treatingone mole of a compound of the formulain an inert organic solvent with two mole equivalents of.alpha.-phthalimidoacetyl chloride or bromide in the presence of abase at -5° to 15°C.
