ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE:A method for forming a carbide layer of a V-a groupelement of the Periodic Table on the surface of an iron, ferrousalloy or cemented carbide article in a treating molten bath,comprising preparing the treating molten bath composed of boricacid or a borate and a V-a group element, immersing the article inthe treating molten bath and applying an electric current to thetreating molten bath with said article being used as the cathode,thereby forming, a very hard carbide layer of said V-a groupelement of the surface of said article. The method of thisinvention can form quickly a uniform and dense carbide layer onthe surface of the article and can be carried out in the openair.
