PHOTOGRAPHIC ELEMENTS CONTAINING COLOR-FORMING COUPLERS HAVING AN INHIBITING EFFECT UPON THE REACTIVITY OF COMPETING COUPLERS

AbstractColor photographic elements containing silver halideand incorporated color-forming materials are described. Theseelements contain at least two differentially light-sensitiveemulsion layers, the overlying layer being sensitive to therelatively shorter wavelengths and containing at least one yellowdye-forming color coupler which has the unusual ability toinhibit the reaction of competing couplers (such as citrazinicacid for example) when competing couplers are used in colordeveloping solutions in the conventional manner. Use of thesecouplers in the overlying (color) layer of multi-layer colorphotographic elements makes it possible to produce colored imageshaving improved graininess and sharpness of the image.Couplers having this unusual capability are selectedfrom those having the structure :wherein R1 and R2 can differ and are non-interferingcouplers substituent groups; at least one of R1 and R2being a ballasting group.- 1 -
