ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREElectrical cables that carry higher voltagerequire insulation of greater thickness. This inventionextrudes the insulation over a cable core and extrudesit in superimposed layers which fuse to one another toprevent formation of voids within the insulation. Theinsulation applied in each superimposed layer increasesthe impulse breakdown stress in volts per mil of insulationthickness. A high voltage cable for any given voltage can,therefore, have a thinner insulation if the insulation isapplied in layers according to this invention instead ofbeing applied in a single layer in accordance with thepractice of the prior art.
