ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREAn artillery shell is provided in its nose in frontof its bursting charge and its detonator with an impact fuzeconsisting of a pressure-distributing plate engageable with theinside face of the nose, a piezoelectric crystal restingagainst the back face of this plate, and an anvil restingagainst the back of the crystal. A pin is seated in theanvil and extends transverse to the direction of travel of theprojectile and a spring-steel wire has a front end loopedaround this pin and a rear end passing back through the burst-ing charge and connected to the shell detonator. When thecrystal is compressed either by deformation of the nose ofthe shell or inertial pressure of the anvil against the backof the crystal, it generates electrical energy that is passedback through the spring-stell wire to the detonator to activatesame.
