Therapeutically utilizable dried extracts with a standardized content of trans-isoasarone are prepd. by extracting air-dried Asarum europaeum L. (pref. the rootstock) with a water-miscible organic solvent, freeing the resulting fluid extract of organic solvent by vacuum distillation, diluting the aqueous residue to twice its volume with distilled water, and extracting with a water-immiscible organic solvent, the resulting fluid extract is thoroughly mixed with Z kg of a carrier material mixture (where Z is given by the formula in which y is the trans-isoasarone content of the extract in kg, t is the amount of dry residue of the fluid extract in kg, and s is the desired percentage trans-isoasarone content of the dried extract), brought to dryness, and thoroughly ground. The extract is useful as an antitussive. The process is simple, avoiding the need to isolate pure crystalline (I), but gives a product with favourable solubility and absorption properties.
