Impact resistant glass incorporating asymmetric laminates - for light weight with progressive resistance to penetration

Impact resistant glazing comprises one solid sheet of glass as an external pure 6-20 mm thick separated by a n air gap from an internal pane which is composite, asymmetric sheet =5 mm thick of layers of glass of diminishing thickness separated by intermediate layers of plastic film, of which at least the film nearest the interior of the buildings is 1 mm thick. Suitable for bullet proof or shrapnel resistant glazing for shop windows, limousines, etc. The surface layers are more scratch- and sunlight-resistant than glazing made of transparent plastics. The progressively increasing flexibility of the constituent layers of the internal pane give successive energy loss from impinging objects penetrating the structure, to provide a much higher impact resistance/weight ratio than solid glazing which offers the same impact resistance.
