Air colloids (aerosols) which are created pyrotechnically are marked with an easily activated tracer, so that spreading out in the upper atmos. or in the atmos. near to the ground, can be investigated. The aerosol is created by the burning of smoke bodies and surrounding the tracer with an envelope of water. Dysprosium trichloride is used as the tracer, obtd by using a smoke body contg. Dy2O3 hexachloroethane Cl2Cl6 and aluminium powder. The pref. smoke body contains by wt. 56% Dy2O3, 36% C2Cl6, 8% Al powder with spot ignition of the body at a target height in the atmos. Used for investigation of the biosphere at great heights and very high dilution factors, e.g. 10-7 per m3. The invention provides a tracer which has low density w.r.t. air and particle size 0.3-0.5 mu m providing a long life.
