A bed of normal and sick use has a slatted framework (1) fitted with at least one drive mechanism (18) which can be easily controlled by the occupant. A transverse slatted grid (14) is mounted on at least two bearing frames (5, 6) and at least one bearing frame (6) can be infinitely adjusted about an articulated joint (7) by the drive mechanism and can then be fixed in any position. This drive mechanism (18) preferably includes a circle segment (8) which is fastened at its centre point (M) and is also secured at one end (9) to the upper bearing frame (6) by a support member (10) whilst a tension or draw member (12) is fastened to the other end (11) of the segment so that it may be moved by an electric motor (13) with self-locking gearing so that it runs down on the segment.
