Leather of split leather is coated with a reactive mixt. of polyisocyanates, polyamines and opt. further isocyanate-reactive cpds., opt. with use of inert organic solvents and/or plasticisers. Process comprises first applying a layer of a system reacting with a polyurethane to a release substrate. A reinforcing textile is then embedded in layer within 15-90 sec while viscosity of reactive system is still below 1500 cP at the prevailing working temp., so that the low-viscosity reactive system can penetrate through the textile. The leather or split leather lining is then applied, and finally the composite material is sepd. from release substrate after drying. Polyurethane-reactive system embeds textile completely and penetrates through to surface to textile, to bond the actual leather substrate. Abrasion-resistant, dimensionally stable composite materials are produced in a single-stage process used partic. for the prodn. of lined leather for shoe uppers.
