The automatic test equipment for checking electronic circuit boards consists of an adapter (3) into which may be plugged various interchangeable test plates (5). The plates are fitted with a number of test point contacts (18). The circuit under test is held in a socket fitted to an arm (19) driven by a stepping drive (20) by which the circuit may be correctly positioned and lowered onto the respective contacts on the test plate. The coordinate system is controlled via a circuit identification reader head (23) carried on an arm above the board. Signals pass to a test controller and measuring unit (16). Also carried on arms above the circuit under test are a remotely-controlled trimming tool (32), temperature scanner (26) and automatic stamp or punch (29) for grading the circuit according to the test results.
