The hoist drive mechanism has a motor-driven pulley, a round part of which at least a lifting belt is reeved, equipped with a hook etc. at one end. The belt contains inlaid reinforcing material running in the lengthwise direction and tension-resistant, particularly steel wires. The material (44) is spaced apart, and along the belt at regular intervals are coupling devices (46), with fixing devices (50) passing through the belt between the lengths of reinforcing material. These devices engage with complementary ones on the periphery of the pulley. The coupling devices can have bosses fitting in recesses in components on the pulley, and typically of part-spherical section.
