The thermal insulating plates are on the mutually facing sides of the tube plates, i.e. on the sides towards the tube space. At one end, each of the heat exchanger tubes is welded to the tube plate by a weld on the nearer side of the tube plate, i.e. towards the tube space. The thermal insulating plates are fixed to the tube plate by fixing bolts, passing through the insulating plates. For heat exchangers conducting fluids possessing especially high thermal conductivity, where the tube plates must be insulated to prevent them from the thermal shock. In partic. for the primary sodium/secondary sodium heat exchanger of a fast breader reactor. The arrangement ensures that the insulating plates are completely independent from the joints between the tubes and the tube plates and also avoids the problem created when the tubes are welded to the outer faces of the tube plates, resulting in a possible small annular gas between tube and tube plate bore which can lead to leakage between the primary and secondary sides of the system.
