The inspection unit for checking damage to the mouths of bottles comprises an optical scanner and a photoelectric detector array. A light source consisting of an annular tube driven by DC is positioned above the bottle so that it is concentric with the centre axis of the bottle. In the centre of the ring is a lens with its optical axis aligned with the bottle axis. Above the lens and shielded from direct light from the annular light source, is an array of photo-sensitive detectors. The array is arranged around a circle which encloses the area covered by the image or alternatively, may be arranged on a straight line which lies in the image area.
