The motor-driven floor cleaning machine has in addition to the circular polishing brush (14) a unit (12) which has at least one roller brush (18) which extends round the perimeter of the polishing brush (14). This sweeps the dirt inwards where it is taken up by a suction nozzle (36) which can be attached to a vacuum cleaner (38) between the two brushes. The bristles of the roller brush (18) run in a helix with the feed direction coinciding with the rotary direction of the polishing brush (14). The dirt which is released by the polishing brush from the floor and spun tangentially outwards is collected up by the outer roller brush and returned to a different point on the polishing brush until it finally reaches the suction nozzle. A water suction nozzle can replace the standard suction nozzle so that the machine is equally effective for scrubbing floors and removing the dirty water.
