The laminated iron core for a transformer, choke, etc. has a split strip wound outer core assembled with one or more inner cores. The inner core(s) is inserted between the two parts of the outer core, and their laminations cross those of the outer cores. The inner core laminations are held together by screws, rivets (12, 13) etc. in holes (10, 11) in magnetically inactive areas (8, 9). Hollow-type rivets may be used. A grounding connection may be made at the holes. The inner core can be manufactured in a simple way without adversely affecting the electrical properties of the core.
