The iron core assembly of a transformer is designed to provide improved heat transfer during cooling in order to permit an increase in the operating range. The core is produced as a spiral winding to form a cylinder (3) that is used in the transformer with a suitable air gap. The windings are bonded together and a radial slit (4) that is provided to limit short circuits, is filled with bonding agent. The outer edge of the cylinder has a number of slots (5) machined at an angle to the outer edge. This provides an increased surface area to enhance heat transfer during cooling.
